Araya Totoan is a traditional Japanese inn with a long and distinguished history,
that has been in business for 18 successive generations of owners.
Located in the hot spring resort town of Yamashiro Onsen,
approximately 100,000 liters of hot spring water flows into the hotel each day directly from the source,
allowing guests plenty of opportunities to enjoy a relaxing soak in the soothing waters.
Meals are made from seasonal ingredients and locally sourced produce, all beautifully presented in carefully selected dishes.
In the early 20th century, the renowned artist Rosanjin would stay at the inn, and some of his works are still on display.
We hope you enjoy our refined hospitality, which has been cultivated through generations of service.
Relaxing Rooms Surrounded by Nature & Tranquility
Our hotel is conveniently situated in the center of the hot spring resort, but once inside you will feel like you are staying at a mountain retreat surrounded by nature.
A variety of room types are available, from Japanese-Western style rooms with open-air baths to pure Japanese-style rooms.
Furthermore, each guest room offers a glimpse of the seasonal outdoors, be it vibrant greens, colorful Autumn leaves, or glistening white snow.
We invite you to enjoy a moment of true relaxation in the peaceful and natural surroundings.
Relax in Soothing Hot Spring Waters
The hot springs of Yamashiro Onsen are a precious natural resource, and also rare in that the water gushes out from a source that lies only a few dozen meters below the ground.
The volume of hot spring water drawn into our hotel is the highest in Yamashiro at approximately 100,000 liters per day. The quality of the water is also excellent, and has even won worldwide acclaim by taking the gold medal at the International Hygiene Exhibition held in Germany in 1911.
Our hotel boasts 3 unique bathhouses, so we invite you to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing soak in the soothing hot spring waters.
Exquisite Food Sourced from Local Nature
Yamashiro Town is located in the Kaga region, an area rich in seasonal produce supplied by the nearby sea, rivers, mountains and farms.
Using an abundance of local ingredients, we try to bring out their fullest flavor for a pure and natural taste.
The dishes are served on Kutani-ware porcelain, Yamanaka lacquerware, and other items carefully selected by the proprietor.
We hope you will enjoy this combination of high-quality local ingredients, paired with traditional Japanese tableware.
A Tranquil Setting for the Contemplation of Art
In the lobby and gallery, we display artworks that are symbolic of Yamashiro Onsen, including pieces by the noted artist Rosanjin who stayed at the hotel in the early 1900s. These include an early ceramic collection entitled Ten Red-Painted Plates, and a Japanese screen portraying a black crow cawing at daybreak that has become a symbol of Yamashiro Onsen.
In addition, other artwork passed down from generation to generation, as well as contemporary works of art, are also on display in the hotel for your viewing pleasure.
Calligraphy, vessels, and seal engravings by the noted artist Rosanjin, who stayed at Yamashiro Onsen in the early 1900s, are on display in the Tea Room Gallery. Please enjoy them along with other selected artworks of the proprietor.
The Rich Culture and History of Kaga
The local area has various sightseeing spots where you can experience the culture and history of the Kaga region, such as Kosoyu (a restored public bathhouse from the Meiji era), the Suda Seika Pottery Kiln (a Kutani-ware pottery kiln associated with the famous artist Rosanjin), and the Kutani-yaki Kiln Exhibition Hall (where you can try your hand at pottery making).
